it can also prevent back pain from developing. When you exhibit poor posture, excessive pressure is put on the back and spine. Prevents Tweaks

Just about every one who has had back pain in their life knows that even the smallest tweak can lead to debilitating pain. One of the primary reasons these tweaks occur is the result of overexerted muscles in the back and neck. When your core muscles are too weak to stabilize your spine, your back muscles must overcompensate. Since these muscles are not meant to serve as stabilizers, they will soon become strained and much more susceptible to small tweaks, also referred to as back spasms. Strengthening the core muscles of your body will prevent your back muscles and ligaments from becoming strained or irritated, which in turn will reduce the probability that back spasms will occur.

Functional Medicine is a very specific method and analysis, which incorporates the actual art and science of medicine. At Camarillo Functional Health, Dr. Michael Veselak focuses on treating chronic patients by examining their case from a functional perspective. This means, he will examine each case through labs, medical history, bloodwork, etc. to find the root cause of each problem. As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and Board Certified in Integrative Medicine, Dr. Veselak has found that successful treatment is the result of finding the source of the problem, and not covering the symptoms with medications. With all chronic pain patients there is an underlying component that must be addressed if the patient is ever going to respond to conservative care and live a life without medications.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis is caused from a narrowing of the spinal canal or lateral recesses which impinges upon the exiting nerve roots. What causes changes in these openings? A lot of things! One major cause, is the the process of aging. As joints and ligaments undergo wear and tear, they can shift partially into these spaces. In fact, spinal stenosis is most common in people in their 50’s and beyond. Spinal stenosis can also be inherited or acquired at birth. In rare cases, synovial cysts, which develop as a result of degeneration in the facet joint in the lumbar spine, have been linked to spinal stenosis, or at least mimic many of the symptoms of spinal stenosis.

At Camarillo Functional Health, Dr. Michael Veselak has been treating cases of spinal stenosis for over 30 years. As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and Board Certified in Integrative Medicine, Dr. Michael Veselak manages spinal stenosis using a Functional Medicine Perspective. Throughout his experience, Dr. Veselak has found that successful treatment is the result of finding the source of the problem, and not masking the symptoms with heavy medications. In many cases, patients have come to our office seeking an alternative to invasive surgery. With the use of state-of-the-art therapies, such as Cervical Traction, Lumbar Traction and spinal decompression thousand oaks, along with his advanced medical knowledge, Dr. Michael Veselak has been able to help many of our spinal stenosis patients avoid surgery, reduce their pain medications, and return to the activities they once enjoyed.

Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is a 21st century approach to evaluating and managing patients suffering from chronic conditions. It is based upon identifying the underlying cause of the disease process or the chronic pain. Rather than treating the symptoms, functional medicine thousand oaks incorporates a whole body analysis, with emphasis on dietary and lifestyle changes. Through careful analysis of genetic influences, environmental factors such as toxic exposure and dietary habits, we can begin to identify the complex web of chronic disease and illness. Modern medicine is great in the management of the acute condition; however, it falls short in the management and prevention of chronic disease. It focuses too much on the magic bullet technique, where one pill fixes the condition for all patients. Unfortunately, this often results in undesirable side effects, leaving patients looking for other courses of treatment.

Dr. Veselak interprets blood work in a functional range, tightening up the typical lab ranges so he can better address patterns of dysfunction leading to the chronic disease process. He will assess each patient based on family history, environmental exposures and past medical conditions. Often times, with chronic complex cases, it is necessary to utilize special labs to properly identify the true cause of the chronic condition. These specialized tests will assess genetic factors, heavy metal toxicity, viral or bacterial exposure, Lyme’s disease, SIBO, Parasites, Nutrition, Amino Acid and Neurotransmitter deficiencies, Pyroluria and Gut Permeability. In doing so, Dr. Veselak will gain a deeper understanding of how the body is functioning, where imbalances may take place, and a clear direction as to how to resolve the core issue of the chronic condition.

Symptoms and Treatment of Work-Related Neck Pain in Office Workers

Between each of the moveable vertebrae is located the intervertebral disc. Disc degeneration and facet joints overloading can cause their arthritic overgrowth. The resultant loss of space and foramen can cause squeezing and pinching of the nerve roots as they exit the spine. This condition is called lateral stenosis. In medical terms, stenosis is termed as “narrowing” of any tubular vessel or structural passageway within the body. In lateral recess stenosis, the space at the exit doorway of the spinal canal called foramen is reduced and narrowed.

What Causes Lateral Recess Narrowing?

There is an evolution for every disease and the causes lie behind. Lateral recess narrowing is caused by disc degeneration, herniated disc, disc bulge and osteophytes. The question arises what recess actually is? The recess is a narrow tube that has sufficient space to allow the nerves to pass through the surrounding tissues and organs. When the portion of the cylindrical space is occupied by the herniated disc, bulging disc and osteophytes, the recess gets narrowed. The height of the intervertebral disc decides the diameter of the recess. Lateral recess is narrowed when the disc is collapsed resulting in tightening of the space. Lateral recess stenosis is diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) scan images. The images depict the clear narrowing of lateral recess if the patient has got one.

Treatment to Relieve Symptoms of Lateral Recess Stenosis

Lateral recess stenosis comes with three types of treatment options- conservative treatment, interventional therapy and surgery. Conservative treatment options include medications, chiropractic therapy and physical therapy whereas interventional therapy includes injections like epidural steroid injection and trans-foraminal epidural steroid injection. When all these nonsurgical treatment options seem to bring no improvement sign in the patient suffering, lateral recess stenosis surgery is recommended as the treatment option. Various surgical treatment options are-

Foraminectomy: It is the spinal surgery that releases the pinched spinal nerves from the foraminal stenosis. The surgery involves the removal of any bone, tissue or excess materials that are reducing space in the foraminal canal.

Discectomy: It is the surgical procedure to remove the damaged portion of the herniated disc in the spine. It tends to be done as microdiscectomy which uses a special microscope to view the disc and the nerves.

Endoscopic Decompression: Endoscopic decompression has proved to of value as it is the minimally invasive technique of removal of herniated disc in a very tissue-preserving way. It helps with chronic back pain that result from disc tear or protrusions. A cutting edge laser is used for this technique to remove the damaged part of the disc.

Spinal Fusion: It is a surgical process used to correct the problems with the bones of the spine called vertebrae. It can be termed as “welding” process. The ideology behind this process is to fuse the vertebrae together into one to relieve the discomfort caused by the degenerated discs.
